Definition of Brick

Brick is a small rectangular hard block typically made of fired or sun-dried clay and used for building materials.

Classification of Bricks

Bricks are of two types –

1.       Ordinary or common bricks

2.       Modular bricks

Engineering Data on Bricks

Size of Brick

a.       Ordinary Bricks (24.2cm X 11.4cm X .7cm)

b.      Modular Bricks (19cm X 9cm X 9cm)

Weight of Brick

a.       Ordinary Bricks Dry 2.8kg par piece

b.      Modular bricks Dry __

Crushing Strength 200kg/sq.cm

Burning Tempetature 1150˚c  to 1700˚c

Ordinary Bricks are Classified into the Following Categories

1.       First Class Bricks

2.       Second Class Bricks

3.       Third Class Bricks

Identification of First Class Bricks

i.                     Well burnt

ii.                   Faces should be plane

iii.                  Should be free from cracks

iv.                 Sharp edges

v.                   Gives metallic sound when hit by a hammer

vi.                 Water absorption 15% by its weight

vii.                When dropped over another from a height of 1 meter it should not break.

Identification of Second Class Bricks

i.                     Burning almost same

ii.                   Distorted faces and edges

iii.                  Gives lose sound when hit by a hammer

iv.                 Slightly inferior than first class

v.                   Distorted faces and edges

vi.                 Water absorption more than 20% by weight.

Identification of Third Class Bricks

i.                     Mostly unburnt, inferior in quality, not used in construction

ii.                   Breaks easily

iii.                  High water absorption over 25%. It becomes soft on immersion in water.
